An important event on the yearly calendar is coming up this week!
That’s right, International Women’s day is taking place this Thursday, giving us a great opportunity to present to you the 10 most powerful women who made the cut in a list of artists, curators, gallerists, critics and collectors, released by Artnet. In no particular order, these are the 10 most influential women who managed to make a difference in the art world.
Marina Abramovic, “the grandmother of Performance Art”, recently executed a Kickstarter campaign for the creation of her own eponymous institute, a venture which proved successful after she received $600,000 in donations. Nita Ambani, is the chairperson of the Reliance Foundation which funds exhibitions regularly at the Met and at the Chicago’s Art Institute and is currently undergoing plans to build a massive art space in Mumbai.
Yayoi Kusama is a painter, sketcher, screen printer and performer, whose 70-year ride in the art world has seen her influence artists with the likes of Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol, as well as the fashion mogul Marc Jacobs. Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are the so-called feminists of the art world and also the founders of Sprüth Magers gallery in Mitte and own a host of spaces spanning Europe and most recently, in the United States.
Next up is Miuccia Prada, the youngest granddaughter of Mario Prada. She is taking charge of the proceedings as the beneficiary of the company and not only is she the head designer of one of the most successful fashion houses in the world, she is also the founder of its subsidiary Miu Miu. Rosa de la Cruz is co-founder of the 30,000 square foot private museum, The de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space, in Miami’s Design District and Sheikha Mayassa Al-Thani, also known as the “undisputed Queen of the art world”, is the chairperson of Qatar Museums overseeing the purchase of works by Damien Hirst and Mark Rothko. In the top list as well, we find Cindy Sherman, whose body of work is enormous. Her use of prosthetics allowed her to morph from person to person and be her own constant subject, thus turning her into one of the most talked about photographers of the past 50 years.
To complete our top 10 most powerful women in the art world list, we meet Maya Hoffmann, Chair of the Swiss Institute and founder of the LUMA Foundation, who played a significant role in the development of Tate Modern, the Serpentine Gallery and the New Museum, and also Ingvild Goetz a German arts patron who founded Sammlung-Goetz in Munich, specializing in new media exhibiting artists including Nan Goldin, Richard Prince and Diane Arbus.
