According to a new report by the Financial Times, the contemporary art scene in Athens -even while the worldwide pandemic- is flourishing.
Dealers, curators and other important people within the Greek art scene have expressed the belief that Athens is evolving into a more supportive and appealing art capital.
In fact, due to the situation of the strict lockdown, many artists found or evolve their creative thinking. Promoting their work online and participating in e-auctions (https://www.kapopoulosart.gr/auctions/), they managed to adjust perfectly in these difficult times. Although the measures against Covid-19 bring an upheaval to the normal rhythm of the city, Athens has come to thrive. Gagosian unveiled its new Athens gallery space and will open its new building this month at the foot of Mount Lycabettus with an exhibition by New York based artist Brice Marden.
Although Jeff Koon’s exhibition at Deste Foundation will be postponed for next summer, a show of work by Kostis Velonis will fill Koon’s slot.
In addition, many other gallery openings, dealers’ actions and more examples of Athens fertile cultural scene keep on appearing, showing that the interest in the city has increased bringing big commercial success.
